10/10 TK

Remembrance Day/Weekend is taken the nearest Sunday to 11th November, this year was 8/9th.

We don't just remember World War 1 and 2 but all the other wars where soldiers have been lost- Falklands, Middle East, Afghanistan. We remember those who sometimes get forgotten too who were enlisted as part of the Commonwealth, Gurka's Australians and Indian.

A blue poppy is used to remember all the animals used and lost their lives in war too.
This has only started in the last few years. I think the film War Horse expanded the remembrance to animals. Dogs are still used a lot. There was a small film on Sunday showing the dog training and a peice on a dog who saved the soldiers it was working with in Afghanistan but broke it's back in the process. It's handler was also injured and the film caught up with them both now they have both retired. The soldier and his girlfriend have adopted the dog who since has recovered from surgery and was running around as if nothing was wrong.

Memorial Day is the last weekend in May for us. We remember all soldiers who lost their lives on that day. Tuesday is Veteran's day. Always the Second Tuesday in November I think or if not, it's always the 11th. This is to give thanks to those who made it back, retired etc. I haven't heard of anyone remembering the animals here. They should as they too act bravely and without doubt and hesitation.

Veteran's day is always the 11th of Nov, something about the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. I think it might have been the end of WWI. Now I gotta google.

It's because Wilson declared it in celebration of the Armistice between the Allies and Germany initially. It started as Armistice Day. The Armistice went into effect on the 11th hour of Nov 11, 1919.

Thanks Biker! I knew 'something' along those lines but not really. Does that make sense? I should considering my dad taught us all kinds of 'patriotic' stuff as kids.

I'd have to look it up to see when it became Veterans day.
