I'm a firm believer in pinch collars. Used properly, they will save you and your dog hours of grief and pain. They are less cruel than choke collars and once the dog knows 'about it' and what it means, you never have to "use" it but onlyhave it on the dog.

I'm sure TK can substantiate that it's still pretty common practice to 'strangle' dogs during training. I can't believe there are PROFESSIONAL trainers out there who get away with that shit, but they do. I've witnessed it. Granted, they don't strangle the dogs TO DEATH, but it's still a horrible, cruel practice. It's using done by literally 'hanging' the dog (or puppy) with its leash, usually just lifting the front feet off the ground, but sometimes the rear ones too.

I should have turned the bitch in I saw doing that in CA one time. She was a pretty popular trainer too. The dog I saw her do it with was probably a 5-6 month old Australian Cattle Dog. Crazy.

I took my 200 lb alpha male to this trainer who has been doing it for years and thats the way he trained him to walk on a leash. Otherwise the damn dog would have dragged me out into traffic. Obviously you wouldn't need to do that with a smaller dog, but it's the only thing that worked for him.

Regardless of how large the dog was, it could have been done another way, Sally. I'm sorry your dog had to go through that.

I'm not. He didn't suffer any injuries and at least he walks now without killing the both of us trying to get to a cat.

The only dog I ever had to use a pinch collar on, was a big rottie... and he was just so insensitive from being mishandled, that it would have taken forever to get his attention without one. I usually use a 'choke' collar, which is a misnomer if it is used correctly of course. There should never be tension on the collar long enough to actually 'choke' a dog.

It's never necessary to 'choke' an animal into submission. I'm sure it worked and your lives are much better now, but I'm still saying it could have been done another way.

I had a German Shepherd who was shall we say an independent thinker. She responded well though to just a tug or two on the leash and a loud sharp reprimand.

Eventually all I had to do was say her name in a gruff disapproving tone of voice. Up to that point though I had to rant at her like a mafia boss dressing down a Lt. who damn near exposed him to the cops.
