Puppy Dies After Being Choked
Man Faces Felony Charge

SAN DIEGO -- A man who said he choked his 10-week-old Labrador retriever as punishment for biting is headed to court on a felony animal cruelty charge because the dog has died.

Officials with the San Diego Department of Animal Services said Coco went into cardiac arrest early Friday and could not be revived.

David Hale Warner took the dog to a veterinary clinic early Wednesday, saying he pinned the dog down for 20 seconds to teach it a lesson after the puppy bit his girlfriend on the nose.

Officials said the dog couldn't walk, was breathing poorly had reddish saliva and blue gums when it was brought to the clinic.

After Warner was arrested, authorities learned he was wanted on a warrant charging him with spousal abuse. If convicted of animal cruelty, Warner faces prison and a fine of up to $20,000.

They NEVER punish animal abusers severely enough... well, except for Michael Vicks. There was a guy in NYC that literally stomped his girlfriend's elderly cat to death after the GF pissed him off about something. There were a lot of outraged people, but he got off with a very light sentence.

Just found a recent article, apparently all he had as 'punishment' was community service.

Joseph Petcka worked at a New York City soup kitchen and other organizations.

His case was conditionally discharged Friday. That means it's expected to be closed without jail time or probation.

A judge also let Petcka reduce his guilty plea to attempted aggravated animal cruelty, a misdemeanor. The 39-year-old Petcka initially pleaded guilty to a felony charge.

Prosecutors said Petcka attacked the 8-pound cat in a drunken, jealous rage in March 2007. Petcka said he overreacted after being bitten by the tabby, named Norman. (This was questionable, there were no marks.)

Petcka had small TV roles as an actor.

Yeah I remember that story. I was pretty pissed about the 'punishment'. I don't think Michael Vick got enough and letting him back into the NFL was the icing on the cake.

There is NO WAY that guy saw the 'error of his ways'. To be that cruel in the ways you killed those poor dogs is a testiment to one's character. A few months in jail is shit. The bullshit he's doing with PeTA is laughable. He's doing it because he HAS to not becuase he wants to. If he truly felt bad for what he did and wanted to help animals, he'd be doing stuff on his own without help from jokes like PeTA. He'd work with reputible organizations like the ASPCA.

There is something psychologically wrong with people who deliberately hurt animals, they should be given therapy.

I suppose the next time he fucks up at or is late for work he needs to have his kneecaps smashed as "punishment" then. Right?

I'm sure TK can substantiate that it's still pretty common practice to 'strangle' dogs during training. I can't believe there are PROFESSIONAL trainers out there who get away with that shit, but they do. I've witnessed it. Granted, they don't strangle the dogs TO DEATH, but it's still a horrible, cruel practice. It's using done by literally 'hanging' the dog (or puppy) with its leash, usually just lifting the front feet off the ground, but sometimes the rear ones too.

I should have turned the bitch in I saw doing that in CA one time. She was a pretty popular trainer too. The dog I saw her do it with was probably a 5-6 month old Australian Cattle Dog. Crazy.

Short leash a dog....acceptable. Lift it....no way.

I wouldn't have been nearly as surprised if I'd witnessed that behavior in WV, but CA???

I took my 200 lb alpha male to this trainer who has been doing it for years and thats the way he trained him to walk on a leash. Otherwise the damn dog would have dragged me out into traffic. Obviously you wouldn't need to do that with a smaller dog, but it's the only thing that worked for him.

Regardless of how large the dog was, it could have been done another way, Sally. I'm sorry your dog had to go through that.
