0 So today I went to sams club had to buy a bunch of tvs for new business and they tend to have the best prices in my experience so anywho. A little asian kid was walking behind me with his mom after I got out of my truck and was pointing at my car saying bat mobile. She was looking at her kid like wtf are you saying my little spawnling. He kept saying bat mobile she looks at my grille and then says oh you have a bat. I was like I dont understand your broken english what about a bat, she said there is one in your car. I was kinda in a rush so I just looked over by my hood and didnt really see anything I said ill check it out later and went inside sams to get my tv's.
I get home after I finish my shiz and sure enough there is a bat stuck in the grille of my car. I stood there scratching my head trying to figure out when it happened. I think it happened Tuesday when I had to drive late to pick up something. Story gets better but here is some pics first. So the story gets better I load that shiz up on facebook because I never seen someone hit a bat thought it was pretty interesting. My brother calls me like 5 minutes after I upload it and hes yelling take down your status now hurry. I was like whats the problem, he says thats a little brown bat they are heavily endangered. I was like so whats the problem I didnt go out driving trying to kill bats with my truck. He said just trust me so I took it down right away, after looking into it I realized this was a pretty rare event. Supposedly in jersey there are only 600 of these bats they know of. Now 599 I am guessing, its worse then killing a bald eagle I probably had better odds at hitting the lottery while getting struck by lightning. I am only posting it here because obviously this is much less exposure then facebook and I didnt do anything wrong so if game and wild life comes to my house oh well I guess. I did feel bad for the little guy though kinda a crap way to go but after I took him out of the grille I know it died instantly because its head landed on one of the cross bars in the grille. SO YEAHHHH crazy day....

0 How the hell are these rare? I see bats flying around all the time at night here. Does your brother have a link?
I had one sitting in the rafters of my barn one time and he stayed there nearly all day. Was pretty cool. Another time we had one stuck in the basement until we snared it in a net and got it out. They're tiny little things, the size of a dwarf hamster.

0 Found the info. They're on the uprise and the numbers have not been counted down to 500.
That pic I posted could very well be one of them. Sadly it's too dark to tell and I didn't have a flash on the camera at the time for fear it would drive it away. That's up in the rafter of the stable in front of my stallion's stall during the daytime. We have brown bats here too. These guys hibernate with them. They are Indiana bats. http://www.nj.gov/dep/fgw/ensp/pdf/end-t...anabat.pdf NJ's endangered species list: http://www.nj.gov/dep/fgw/tandespp.htm ****************** Edit to add photo: I isolated him out from the rafter and did my best to lighten his fur and stuff with Photoshop. Comparing the photos in the link my little guy just might be one of them. lilbat.jpg (Size: 68.13 KB / Downloads: 24) Screen shot 2013-08-30 at 5.45.57 AM.png (Size: 66.07 KB / Downloads: 24)

0 From what I was told white nose syndrome killed off about 98% of them in the spring, so the specific species here in jersey is now considered heavily endangered. I would like my brother to be wrong but hes obsessed with reptiles, bats etc and usually knows his shiz. To further convince me he had one of his close friends, who is a professor in endangered species and conservation in Maryland confirm the type of bat based on the pictures and the dire situation they are in.
Here is cut and paste from a nj news article about it: ROCKAWAY TOWNSHIP — A new count at the state's largest hibernation site for little brown bats has revealed that white nose syndrome killed off at least 98 percent of the population, according to a report from NorthJersey.com. The report said the small bat's population was once at a high of 30,000 at Hibernia Mine and has dropped to 600 because of the fungal disease. Little brown bats in New Jersey began disappearing in 2009 from white nose syndrome, an affliction in which a fungus grows over their muzzles, ears and wing membranes as they hibernate. The disease makes them move around during hibernation, which burns up their stored body fat and as a result they die of hunger, according to the report.

0 It's so unusual for them to be flying so low too.
Anthony, tell your brother he's wrong anyway. The cave isn't the only place they roost and breed around here because that photo of my bat was when I lived in Jackson. There has to be more that were not in that cave where the infection spread. He's also talking about the little brown bats and not the Indiana bat. Not sure if the fungus affected both species. Just to argue I know how your brother annoys you.
