I bet walking one of those on a leash would just make most people shit themselves.

0 Tait is correct about black bears also being brown. But I have never seen, or heard, of a brown bear being black.
Anyway, you can easily tell which is which just by looking at the head, and muzzle. Black bears have a more gracile look, and the muzzle blends effortlessly with the cranium. Brown bears have very large craniums and the muzzle is shorter, or stubbier. Brown bears are bad news, and several times more dangerous than black bears. As a boy scout in Alaska, we were constantly told what to do if we come into contact with a brown bear. I always worried about meeting one in the wild. 0 Yea, I carry bear spray as the initial response and it has been proven to work most of the time.
Failing bear spray, or when I run out of it, I have a Ruger .41 Magnum revolver ready for a more permanent solution. I fear being caught in the same position as a couple of hikers who used bear spray and ran out, only to find the bear came back to haunt them in the end. Grizzlies, a sub-species of Brown Bear, are found in Montana and their range is increasing in the Western part of the state. I take bears seriously.

0 John, I never said brown bears could be black. Don't know how you figured that one.
Gunnen, I'll concede to the brown bear in NJ. I only went what I was told by (I say this lightly) "officials" in state parks. I'm too lazy to look up the info. I was under the impression there is a species of brown bear that is small and not as aggressive as those out west. I have seen black bears here on plenty of occasion, mostly upstate. We used to install electric fencing to keep them off large estates.
I have no idea what you're talking about so here's a bunny with a pancake on it's head

0 I've had bears walk through my yard. A couple of years ago I looked out the side door and lo and behold there's a bear strolling casually down the bank from in front of one of my vehicles then it loped lazily off into the woods.
No big deal. I just wish I'd had a camera with me ready to go. It was a pretty decent sized bear but kinda skinny as it was spring and it was a bit torn down from hibernation. Got bobcats galore out behind the house. I hear them all the time. |
