Bobcat Sightings Freaking People Out - Twitchin Kitten - 04-17-2012

Why is everyone so afraid of nature? I just spent some time digging around for the story but I can't find an "official" news story. Watching the local morning show here, Westchester county, NY has seen an increase in bobcat sightings.

So? I mean Westchester is UPSTATE where it's much less congested. They have coyote, bear, so why not bobcat? You should be more afraid of the damn coyote. They'll snatch your pets and babies. A bobcat is solitary and eats mice and other small animals.

Digging around for the story, there doesn't seem to be one. This apparently was a 'filler' story of some sort and the photos they used and reports were from the Westmoreland Sanctuary in Westchester.

Idiots.

I think they saw a recent article about a species of Northern Lynx, who are now being seen more around the Alaska-Canadian highway. Apparently there are quite a few overpasses that allow the rare lynx to cross the highway and not come in danger of being run over.

I saw the article last week, and these people must have thought lynx, or bobcats, would be a neat local story.

I can't vouch for recent traffic on the Alcan highway, but when my parents and I twice traveled it on the way to Fort Richardson, traffic along it were less than sparce. It was gravel too. But that was decades ago.

They were specific to Westchester, John. Acting like if you see a wild animal anywhere near a residential area something surely is wrong.

They do that here in NJ too. You should see the insanity if anyone sees a raccoon during the day! I've seen cops called in to shoot it because surely if it's out in the day, it MUST be rabid. Idiots.

I live against a wildlife sanctuary and people get all pissed if they see fox and other critters too. What did they think when they moved here?

I bet these are the same people who go around signing petitions to save things.

We are starting to get black bears in the area here. I have not seen any myself except down in PA, and he was more worried about getting caught being up to no good and getting away from me than sticking around to see me.
Anyway, whenever there is a bear sighting here people are just as happy to see the cops shoot it or something. Then when you see pictures people take of the big bad black bears drinking sugar water out of a humming bird feeder I can see why they want them shot. Mean old bears with a sweet tooth get addicted to sugar water. Once a black bear gets that sugar water monkey on his back there is no telling what he will do next, maybe eat the bird seed out of the other feeder or maybe eat a bowl of dog food that was left outside.
I'm gonna go load some 00buck into a shotgun and go outside and wait.

People are fucking stupid. It's usually the people that are the problems.

Bears shit in my yard all the time. The Fish and Game, as well as people, don't want them harmed, just tranquilized and taken back into the woods. Most of the time, they don't stick around.

We have black and brown bear in NJ and people freak out all the time when they see them. What they refuse to realize is that they need to contain attractants to the animals so they don't come into the residential areas. But noooo.... the idiots think the animals should think about where they go and what they do and realize to leave the people alone. Idiots - all of them and I want to slap them until their grandchildren come out smart.

You have black bears who are brown in New Jersey. Black bears can come in all colors -- no bullshit. They make people take a test before getting a bear tag here in order to hammer home that black bears are brown quite often. You have to look at shoulder humps, facial features, and actual size.

I would really have to wonder at Grizzly and Alaskan Brown bears existing in New Jersey otherwise.

RE: Bobcat Sightings Freaking People Out - Twitchin Kitten - 04-17-2012

No, we have brown bears. Not grizzly or other big ones but they claim we have brown and black. I know black bears can be brown, I've seen plenty of them myself.

We also have rattlesnakes, quicksand and copperheads too. There's quite a bit of open space left and people seem to think all the "bad" and "dangerous" animals are not here anymore. I was surprised to find quicksand. Found it because I sunk my horse to his saddle in the shit. It's not the real loose stuff you see on TV, it's like mud that sucks you in. You think you're going over tight terrain and all of a sudden you sink. I nearly had a heart attack thinking I'm going to lose my horse in this shit! Good thing he wasn't the panicky type and sat still while I unbuckled the saddle and worked on getting him out. He lost two shoes in the ordeal and I lost one.

I call bullshit on the brown bear bit.

It seems from searching the NJ Fish and Wildlife site that *Brown Bears* are not existent there, at least from what I could gather - I didn't see anything on brown bears but save for the site saying black bears are also brown. Here is some shit on black bears though:

Bears are a serious source of contention with me. BEARS
