I'll admit my ignorance on the whole thing as to it's origins and the fight for separation from England. I will also admit that I halfway gave a shit after I saw the movie "The Wind That Shakes The Barley" and for the time period, I wondered why they never asked us for help and why they didn't form a regular army and fight for their freedom like we did.

I don't know how accurate the movie is, but it did leave me wondering why, back then we didn't do anything to help. At the least, guide them to how to do things instead of allowing them to turn into a long standing terrorist organization. Again, maybe because no one asked us for help? I don't know.

You know what I never understood? Why the USA never got behind Ireland in the first place when they wanted to break free from England. Why let the IRA turn into what it is today?

Yep, and they're all telling her she's a fool. She's Australian and apparently everything she knows has been learned from an ex-pat forum that supports the IRA. She's a belligerent asshole anyway but this one really pissed me off.

There is a lot of minor details and history, Twitch, that took me a 14hr plane flight to read and try to understand. Ireland is closer to England than North America, and they were ruled far more closely than North America. Start with the Norman invasion of Ireland, and work your way through it. It's fascinating, boring in some areas, bloody, and often interesting.

That the Irish were staunchly Catholic while England was Protestant colored much of the history.
