You know what I never understood? Why the USA never got behind Ireland in the first place when they wanted to break free from England. Why let the IRA turn into what it is today?

Because the struggle was centuries old (since the Normans conquered Ireland in the 1180s IIRC), and stood a great chance of continuing for more, many more, years. The last thing the US needed to do was get involved in any long standing blood feuds and threaten conflict with major powers.
