from facebook. It's sorted now, but do I need to change passwords or anything?

Serves me right - I have been ignoring my antivirus' upgrade notices for months. Then Brian leaves the computer unattended for 5 mins, comes back and this thing (the computer said it was a trojan or something similar) took over the computer, wouldn't let my antivirus turn on and started downloading porn!!
Eventually I got got McAffee off its ass and the computer is now free and clear of disease - but I've never got a virus before. So do I need to change my passwords and stuff?

Yes you should change all your passwords just to be on the safe side. Also look into a new Antivirus. Kaspersky is what I recommend.

You know you guys, it would be nice if you provided Sarah some links.

Sarah, I use Avast free edition and it's pretty damn good. It will block trojans trying to come in and shut the page down on you. McAfee and Norton are absolute crap and do nothing but hog your computer's resources.

http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

scroll down a little for the list of downloads. Take the second one from the top marked English.
Follow the instructions about registration and what not and you've got a good free antivirus software.

Avast is what I use and have no problems. AVG is good too and also free.

Go to Cnet and you will find both.

Avast and AVG both miss things though. Too much for me to suggest them to anyone, especially if they aren't really computer savvy. Hence suggesting Kaspersky.

Kaspersky AU

Sarah......

As well as a good virus program you should get a registry repair program and a spyware destroyer.

I use Glary registry repair and Spybot S & D (seek and destroy) and A-Squared

http://download.cnet.com/Glary-Registry-...?tag=mncol

http://download.cnet.com/Spybot-Search-a...?tag=mncol

http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/

If you run a virus scan then follow with Glary then Spybot and follow with A-Squared you should stay relatively problem free!

A-Squared catches a few things that Spybot overlooks and vice-versa.
