Remodeling the Nuclear Room

Well today is the day we got in concert and decided the nuclear green and red room had to go.

This was our original computer room / office and then I moved it to the bigger room. I now decided I want the office back in there with smaller furniture - two corner desks for our workstations and the printer and stuff in the middle under the window.

We will bring the Bowflex and treadmill in this room and also Matt's music equipment. IF there's room for a futon or something for people to sleep on overnight, then we'll stick that in here too.

We decided there is a lot of CRAP that can go in the garbage too!

So here is the photo journal of our beginning work.

This stuff on the walls is 40 year old particle board panelling that was glued on and then tacked too. We pulled it off and there is that hideous blue paint under it.

The floor is shot so we'll carpet that.

OK did a little more work this weekend. It's really hard to take pictures in there now because the room is so small and we have no place to stick the treadmill and Bowflex.

But they are now encased in plastic to keep the dust off them and we opened up the closet today to get that prepared to trim and make it a shelving unit for the stereo and storage for computer related stuff.

Sadly we're going to have to do the same thing in the room I have the computers in now when we are done in there and moved the stuff in!

All those squiggles and X's you see is where they glued that shit on the walls too. What a royal pain in the ass this is but it's actually going to cost us under $300 all in all! We took inventory downstairs and found we have plenty of primer and paint to paint the walls a nice white with a satin finish and the same blue paint to use on the trim that will match the rest of the house!

So we only had to buy the spackle, some plaster of paris for the big holes above the closet frame and 6 pieces of moulding and some sandpaper for the sanding machine once the spackle is dry.

We'll purchase the rug last then move everything in. I'll get rid of this big assed computer station and get two corner units and a desk under the window. Put all kinds of shelving on the walls and the closet is going to house file cabinets and the stereo equipment and other electronics.

Today is sand the walls day. I hate this part of the job.

But once it's sanded I'll have all the rest of the glue off and then I can spackle some more. I'm going to be a giant ball of dust today!

I'm about ready to go with either textured wall paper or throwing a layer of sheetrock over this. What a fucking mess!

I got 3/4 of two walls sanded and I gave up. I've got blue snot now due to breathing in this shit. Masks are useless. I've got the exhaust fan going.

The glue you see on the walls only softens with the sander. SO, I'd have to sand, scrape and skim coat then resand smooth again.

I can't. I just don't have it in me. I'll miter the trim and frame the window and doors but I'm not going to do sheetrock and sanding again.

Matt's going to call his friend to come look at this and make a suggestion. He is a sheetrock / skim coat guy and I'm hoping he can wall paper. I'll just pick a nice white on white slightly textured pattern and go with it. It'll look nice and hide all that shit under there. Let the next person to buy the house gut the room and 'rock it.

I am redoing my bathroom and it also had glue everywhere behind the shower wall behind the tile on the walls etc. I used a heatgun to soften the glue and it came right off with a large putty knife. Half is done on the tub side. Now I will be tackling the opposite wall where the sink and the toilet is. At least the hard stuff is done. But the lino is stuck to the floor really good. I must have told myself 10 times that I should have taken a week off to do this. And I should have rented a dumpster.

How old is the glue? This glue on my walls seems to be around 30 years old. Its still as you see it in the last photos..... waiting for sheetrock. If the rain and snow ever stop, I'll have a dry truck bed to haul it home in so I can finish the damn project.

I got all the woodwork and I'll be doing all that finish work myself. Just can't haul sheetrock in the wet.
