On Saturday a sheriff's wife was shot by a 4 year old boy and died when he was showing his guns to some one. Today in toms river a 6 year old shoots his 4 year old playmate with a .22 rifle, the article says the boy is in critical condition but from other reports I read he has now passed away. This type of stuff is a horrible tragedy but on top of it all it fuels stupidity to take guns from responsible owners. I have nothing against laws that throw the book at irresponsible owners and even requiring the use of gun locks and safes. With being a gun owner comes a responsibility to society regardless of having kids in the house or not.

(CNN) -- A 6-year-old New Jersey boy is in critical condition after being shot in the head by a 4-year-old playmate, according to authorities.
It was the second incident in the United States in recent days involving young children accidentally shooting others.
In Toms River, New Jersey, the two boys were playing in the yard of the 4-year-old's home Monday evening. The younger child left the yard, went inside his family's house, retrieved a .22-caliber rifle and returned to the yard, according to Sgt. Robert Rankin of the Toms River police department.

While the parents of the 4-year-old were in the yard nearby, the boy emerged with the rifle and a shot rang out, Toms River Police Chief Michael Mastrondardy said during a news conference Tuesday morning.
"It's really difficult to deal with," Daniel Watkins, uncle of the 6-year-old boy, told CNN affiliate WCBS. He said the two children were friends. "This is something that shouldn't have happened. It's horrible."
The Ocean County prosecutors office is investigating the incident to determine whether charges will be filed.

On Saturday in Tennessee, the 48-year-old wife of a deputy sheriff died after a 4-year-old boy shot her, authorities said.
The deputy sheriff was showing a relative some of his guns at the deputy's home when his wife and the child came into the room. The child manged to pick up a loaded handgun and fired a single shot, killing the woman, authorities said.

Anyone leaving a LOADED gun where ANYONE, let alone a child, can easily access it is irresponsible beyond description!

Blame the irresponsible owner, not the gun, and throw the book at them.

If your guns are locked up 24/7 doesn't that defeat the purpose of home defense?

Yes, lock them up when you are not around to supervise or when you are out of the house. Common sense dictates that.

I have guns all over the house, they are loaded but are in pistol safes, the one by my desk is top opening and takes literally 4 seconds to open. The one by my bed I enter a code it drops down with a light on so you can see it and everything. That one opens in under 3 seconds, and I practice getting to them and opening them every few weeks. My plan B for my room is I have another safe with shotgun ammo in it and I enter in code door opens I take out the shells and grab the shotgun behind my bedroom door. Its a slower option for sure but its just a back up the main is the safe connected to my night stand.

The defensive gun safe solutions today are excellent and there is really no reason to have to keep a gun out and loaded now a days. In your case twitch you could keep the revolver out and put your rounds in moon clips in something secure.

My gun is loaded in the drawer for fast grab. I have no kids in my house and don't have any friends with kids of any age coming over to visit. If I go out, the gun gets put away somewhere with the safety lock on it in a locked area. The safety lock is a joke. Anyone with a good pair of linesman snips can cut that thing off in a second.

I do remember a story about a guy that kept a loaded revolver on his nightstand, one night his phone rang, he picked up the gun, held it to his ear and:

Seriously? Wow. Mine is in my undies drawer. Worst that will happen is something lacy will be hanging off the barrel while I shoot someone. Smile

They will get aroused then die. Lol

Yeah the lock cable that guns come with are an appeasement measure manufactures did for the anti gunners and to limit their liabilty. They however would stop any young kid from using the gun which is its main purpose.

I have my home defense 12 ga between my dresser and night stand open. Shells are nearby (secure) and I can have the gun loaded in 20 seconds or less.

But......if there are going to be small kids or witless friends in the house I put the gun in a closet and close the door to the room. It's a VERY noisy door so if anyone opens it I know. They would have to know exactly where both the gun and ammo is and still couldn't get both before I made it to the room and kicked the shit out of them.

That is the sort of rule required in this country. The gun must always be in a locked cabinet and preferred cabinet is in a gun club away from home.

Did I tell you I walked home the other day past what turned out to be a gun raid?
