Discovery Channel - airing right now.

Anybody watching this idiot jump out of a weather balloon from space? He's got to get to 25 miles up and he's going to jump out to earth.

Pretty sure that's only been done once before.

If he does it right he will be able to exceed mach 1 at the right air density and become only the second person to do that without the aid of an aircraft.

He's trying to break the sound barrier. Wouldn't that kill him without a pressurized cabin? That suit can't be enough.

Also, coming in through the atmosphere or not? If he is, erm, wouldn't he burn up at that speed? The guy before him only did it from 16 miles. How far is the 'burn zone' from the ground?

Why don't I know that shit? Gah

Ok they're saying that the fellow before (who is this guy's mission controller) has the record and jumped from 19 miles.

They are also saying that this will be the FIRST time the sound barrier will be passed without an aircraft. I could have sworn the first guy did it.

Anyway......at around 5 - 7 miles up he'll break mach. After that the air density will actually slow him down to sub-sonic speed.

He's not out of the atmosphere at 25 miles so the re-entry burn won't happen. As well he won't develop the speed for the burn.

Well, I was way off on the acceleration peak!

He reached max acceleration about 30 seconds into the fall which would have placed him about 12 or so miles up.

They aren't sure as of yet if he reached mach. The max speed estimate was 729 MPH. It depends on the air density then if he broke the sound barrier.

He didn't break Kittinger's sustained free fall record (missed it by 14 seconds) but did get records for:
Highest balloon ascent
Fastest free fall
Highest jump

Well, that was uneventful. I don't even think he broke any records for the speed.

Yes he did.

729 MPH is, upon verification of the instrumentation, the speed record.

He missed on the longest time in free fall. 14 more seconds would have tied Kittinger and 15 would have been the new record.

Well someone had an exciting day Smile

Still think mine was better though.
Took my Honda down to Weymouth to see the sand Trail.

http://www.visitweymouth.co.uk/index.php?resource=247

Lost Mark on the way, then like a numpty phoned him to say I had parked my bike up with a couple of Speed Triples out side 'Marks and Sparks' (Marks & Spencer) but because of the noise from the sands he got really grumpy because he couldn't hear me, so I went into the shop to explain where I was and there he was.... on the other side of the shop door!

Brilliant day still Biggrin not even too cold to ride home 14C - not too bad for October.
