I went and renewed my CBT today.
Paul and Bill are on holiday while they were waiting for an updated license on their premises. Paul suggested I went to Richard in the next town.
It was a really nice Spring day, bright and sunny but not so bright traffic wasn't going to see us. I borrowed a Yamaha since my Honda needs to be serviced, which I'll do this weekend. It's a slow bike
The test has changed (Again) but as my instructor said the test hasn't made a provision for re-takes to continue to ride unlike a re-take after a fail. So after the blerb (safety/maintenance/highway code/clothing) we went out on the road. The mechanic was disappointed that I said I was fine to go straight to the test track on the bike and he didn't have to ride it over for me (like he did for the lady the day before).
Marc, the instructor kept in touch with a helmet to helmet intercom, so I wasn't surprised when we arrived in a residential area to ride around, I thought to get used to the bike. Did a couple of tests and set off again further into the village to 'practice' junctions and hill starts, then on to roads with obstacles, give way and stop signs.
None of these roads had I ever been down before.
The new part of the test is to take the instructor from A to B using road signs. 'Take me to Poole Harbour' he said 'I will now conduct the test in silence unless I need to bring something to your attention. That's when I realized I was doing the test and not going to the test track.
When we got into the junction leading to the Quay I indicated right, and left it on at the traffic light (we were in the middle lane at the time). Marc asked me to cancel the indicator, so I did. Lights go green, pull away, do a 'life saver' to the right, indicator to the right pull into the outside lane and round towards the filter system to the quay.
We are having a cup of tea on the harbour wall chatting to friends of mine who were also there on their bike and Marc able to join in because he had tested Becky for her CBT on the Sunday before.
Marc told them he had corrected me at the junction only to realize I was actually correct and he was wrong, and if he was guiding me himself we would have not only been in the wrong lane but ended up in ASDA carpark!
It turns out he came from Portsmouth to test me and had only been to Poole Quay once before and liked it so much he wanted to go there again but couldn't remember the way!
So then knowing I had passed, I suggested the trip back to the centre not through Bournemouth but a more scenic route taking about an hour. So long as it had several types of road conditions Marc was in agreement.
He said later that he really enjoyed the route and cleared the cobwebs and I was a fast but safe rider. He made a note of the route and was going to bring his brother down that way for a trip and if he had a pupil that passed the test with 30 minutes he would double test them on that route and hopefully let them have some fun!
