Ok, the band is the Runaways.

Not sure what you mean by oldest member? As in with the band from the first... or oldest in age?

Oldest member as in with them the longest is a tie between Joan Jett & Sandy West.
Oldest member as in age is Micki Steele.

I meant, name the oldest member (in age) while playing in the original band.
You got the band correct.
Your oldest member is not correct in either case.

Mikki Steele only lasted a short while and Joan Jett replaced her, neither which was ever the oldest member of the band.

Did you ever get to see them live? (btw)

I'm too young, and Joan was in it from the start. Her, Sandy, and Kim Fawles(sp?) made the band

And how do you figure Micki isn't the oldest? She's older than everyone else by like 4 years minimum. I think 5 years minimum. She was born in 1954, Joan was born in '59.. in fact a lot of them were born in '59. But feel free to correct me if I'm wrong... relying on Wikipedia and other such sites for this info

Hmm let's see. I was there. I know the history. Joan Jett did not start the band. Micki Steele started it but never recorded the album. I was fortunate enough to see them twice with the Ramones. They had a huge cult following back in the day.

I dug through my big box of rock n roll memories - articles, pictures and posters, jackets etc..... Sadly I didn't save the articles I so distinctly remember reading in Circus magazine but I have two small pictures I had cut out. I can scan them if you wish.

At the time of their release of their first album, June 1, 1976, the band was set.

THE RUNAWAYS started as a bit of a lark. Back in the summer of 1974, California based Bomp Magazine ran a competition, sponsored by Kim Fowley, open to, "Girls who can bring hysteria, magic, beauty and teen authority to a stage. Girls with youth, energy, dedication, wildness and style." In the end, the Runaways were formed, first as a trio, then as a quartet now a quintet. At the time they were all around fourteen or fifteen but now most are sixteen, the oldest is Lita Ford at seventeen. The rest of the group are Joan Jett, Cherie Currie, Sandy West and Jackie Fox. Their debut LP "The Runaways" is now on Mercury in the US. Critics claimed the album was dated from the moment it was released, perhaps dooming it to never going above number 194 on the US album charts.

OH and to add to that, Joan Jett replaced Micki Steele. It's easy to think she was there from the start because Micki didn't record the first album. I think there are actual tracks of her someplace though. Would be nice to dig those up and give them a listen!

Early years

The Runaways were formed in late 1975 by drummer Sandy West and rhythm guitarist Joan Jett. They had introduced themselves (on separate occasions) to producer Kim Fowley stating their ideas to form an all-girl band. Fowley, who was always looking for the next big thing, gave Jett's phone number to West. The two met on their own to discuss the possibilities. After rehearsing together, the pair contacted Fowley to let him hear the results. Fowley then helped the girls find the other members. Although Fowley would continue to take credit in the press for creating the band and the music, he would later admit, "I didn't put The Runaways together, I had an idea, they had ideas, we all met, there was combustion and out of five different versions of that group came the five girls who were the ones that people liked".

Starting as a power trio with singer/bassist Micki Steele, The Runaways began the party and club circuit around Los Angeles. In 1975, they added 16-year-old lead guitarist Lita Ford and lead singer Cherie Currie to the lineup. Singer/bassist Micki Steele left the group, later resurfacing in The Bangles. A local bassist named Peggy Foster took over on bass but also left after a month. Finally, Jackie Fox (who had originally auditioned for the lead guitar spot) was added on bass, and the line up was complete.

She began her professional career as Micki Steele in the teen-girl band The Runaways, among the first all-female rock groups.[1] Steele's stay in the Runaways was brief, leaving the band in late 1975, months before the recording of their first self-titled album. The main recording of this early period is an August 1975 demo session, bootlegged and later released as the 1993 album Born To Be Bad, with Steele playing bass and singing lead vocals on most songs.[5] Additionally, this release also has her first songwriting credit with 'Born To Be Bad', cowritten with Joan Jett and Kim Fowley.

It was also at Rodney's that Joan was introduced to Kim Fowley, record producer, impresario, and songwriter. Joan sparked Kim's interest with her dream of starting an all girl rock band. Later, when Kim met another young girl with the same dream, Sandy West, he put the girls in touch. Joan and Sandy decided to employ Kim in helping find the rest of the band.
