Wells Fargo is one of the banks charging for debit card purchases.

Gunnen, thanks! I'm going to look into them today. One more question - Matt and I are not married, is that a requirement? But - we've been together 11 years so I think NJ recognizes that we're "common law" married or some such shit.

This is a stepping stone to the government taxing /charging for other electronic communications.

The internet is in their sights as a huge source of revenue, I don't use a debit card, never have, I cash one check every 2 weeks when I draw all the funds but a small amount out of my checking acct.

My bills are paid by cash or auto withdraw from an entirely different acct.

If they all took pay pal I would pay them all through that system, it costs zero to send money.

It's getting increasingly old having our elected officials top priority being finding ways to tax us, it seems that is all that they do anymore, if they are in session it's all about finding some other way to charge us a tax or fee on something.

A resolution to avoid an evil is seldom framed till the evil is so far advanced as to make avoidance impossible.

You're absolutely right, Havoc.

You can pay through your paypal - get the paypal debit card and use that. The only problem is getting your money into paypal if you don't want to use a regular bank account.

Try looking into ING Direct online. But again, it needs to be tied into a local bank for it's source of funds.

What happens in the US happens here.....eventually.

We have charges on credit cards and ATM. Although we have two banks accounts, the main bank we can use almost any machine and there is no charge, but they prefer we drew cash at a post office for security.
The other account we have had since we have been married and that is useful to obtain credit of any kind......only they now charge us for having the account!
Mark went into the branch and did his nut about it- and got a round of applause from the queue. It didn't make any difference, we now have to pay a fee for them to 'use our money wisely'..........the very bank that needed the government to bail them out of a hole.

Cash is King.

If we all can manage to get by with using cash for nearly everything, AND WE CAN, we'll be reversing things and having banks beg us to bank with them again. Maybe they'll give out new toasters again too!

US Postal Money orders - use 'em instead of checks.

The only thing I see as a problem is resisting the urge to spend that loose cash lying around the house!

I don't see many people with the balls to go to this extreme either. People are lazy and will accept a foot up their ass readily if it means they will have things convenient for them.

Trudi, how does a post office there offer more security?

Is this physical security against a robbery or electronic security?

Why on earth are the banks in England connected to the post offices there?

Cash can be manipulated by the powers that be regardless. There is no real winning for most. I am more fatalistic than most so it doesn't bother me as much as it used to. I've accepted various facts and rules concerning things in the past few years and understand there is not much to help it.

The internet is coming under increasing scrutiny for regulation and calls for oversight, it would only follow taxes would be placed on transactions. The system is almighty anymore. Most of my bills are deductions from my billing checking account (so they cannot touch my funds in other accounts by taking too much, etc) with USAA's attention and acceptance. I don't suppose that will come under fire eventually.

I dunno, Twitch, you would have to call USAA and talk to them. They may require it or they may recognize common law marriages or whatever eventual entrapment the state places upon a couple anymore. I am not married and I only focused on getting it for myself. I do know basic eligibility is all.

I posted a thread dedicated to USAA.

I have benefits but they have to be "attached" to Matt. Either way, we're doing better without them for insurance and other stuff but we'll be looking into more. See the thread.
