I'm guessing that the first filter was restricting fuel flow as it was likely made for a line being fed from a pump.

Just FYI......fuel line filters for lawn and garden tractors work for bikes and sometimes you can get them at some pretty cheap prices. If you need one while you're on the road just find a TSC, Sears, Lowe's, Home Depot, WallyWorld or hardware store and you'll be up and running in no time for just a couple of bucks!

If you are gonna keep that bike for a while you may want to look into getting K & N air filters for it. They have much better air flow than stock type filters so you'll see better performance and fuel mileage.

Did you try running it hard with the baffles removed from the muffler yet? That will "blow out the shit" from the engine and further increase performance and mileage. Run it at a good rip with some stop and go so that you can run some hard acceleration. For you, take a ride out 5 over to Clarence and back. (I figure that should be about a 60 mile round trip for you.) That should have it running like a champ!

You might want to put about 2 ozs of Mystery Oil in the gas tank before taking that ride and toss a gallon of premium gas in the tank on top of it.

Remember too that it's an 80's bike and wasn't designed for gas with ethanol mixed in. You may want to add an ounce of mystery oil at each fill-up to help carb and cylinder lubrication. Keep a container or two in the saddle bag.

I thought about just putting like a briggs & stratton filter in it, but if I remember right those are just kind of a screen, so I spent the extra $2 and got one made for bikes, about 6 bucks. That other one was from auto zone or somewhere and had a paper filter in it and yeah, I figure probably made for stuff with a fuel pump. I drained the tank but I know there is still rust and shit in there, I will carry a spare filter or 10.

I just spent $40 for a honda filter, so it ain't gonna get no K&N. :p

I've been running sea foam through it, what do you think of that stuff LK?

Have you ever tried it and would you weigh more towards MM or sea foam?
I used to use marvel mystery oil in another bike I had, but it was newer and never did have any problems.

I don't know if I can get the baffles out of the pipes, they might fall apart. But I have been running the dogshit out of it every time I ride it.
It's not too bad now, just some slight hesitation under hard acceleration, mostly in 5th gear right about 45-50 mph. I might try cleaning the carbs another 3 or 4 times.....actually, I might look into a kit with new jets and stuff, but I think it's more about the little ports and holes and stuff where things have to flow through the body of the carb anyway.

I'll run it either way as I really don't expect it to make it all the way to the Pacific and back....nah, fuck that, it'll make it.

I am going like the last week of Jul first week of Aug 2012, I'm planning on running I90 out and then gonna meander a bit on the way back. I have no plans yet except going to Walnut Grove, and I figure I'll try for the west coast in about 4-5 days.
I figure I'll strap my tent, mattress, and sleeping bag, down on top of the saddle bags. One saddle bag will be for tools, one will be for a change of underwear and socks, and the trunk will be for possibles, and I'll stash all the contraband in the fairing.

I gotta find and grind that pesky VIN number off the frame before I go, just in case I have to kick it into lake Erie in Cleveland or something.

I thought about burning man, but probably wouldn't go to Sturgis even if I was going through at the right time, the only thing about Sturgis that I would even care about would be the boobies.

G'head, gimme suggestions, I'm all ears.

Sea Foam is good stuff. I've never used it myself but know people that have and never heard a complaint. I simply prefer Mystery Oil because I'm very familiar with it and have used it since the early 70's for everything from freeing rusted nuts and bolts to engine and transmission maintenance. The big difference is that Sea Foam uses different formulations for different jobs where Mystery Oil is one size fits all.

Hell......I filled the cylinders of a froze up Pontiac 400 that had sat out with no hood on the car and no cover on the engine for 7 years. I let it sit for 3 days then pulled the spark plugs back out then put a socket, 36" breaker bar and 4 foot cheater pipe on the harmonic balancer pulley. I didn't have to yank very hard before it broke loose and with 4 or 5 revolutions of the engine it was turning freely. Put some fresh plugs in, hooked up a battery and crossed my fingers. It rolled over for about 15 seconds then sputtered. 2 more tries and it fired up! I've been convinced ever since.

If SF is working for you then by all means keep using it!

As far as the air filters......I was a big fan of "green weenies" since I did a lot of off road and motocross riding. I replaced the stock filter from the air box on my 2 cyl Suzuki street bike with them. They WERE a bit of a maintenance issue though. I had to pull and clean them about once a month but they sure did catch EVERYTHING before it got to the carbs. K & N's weren't around at that time. If they were I would have used them.

The Honda filter you bought should last you 2 or 3 years depending on how much dust and dirt, pollen etc you ride through.

That Pontiac story should be a testimonial for MM if I ever heard one. I have mess with both but have no solid proof of anything great. I was filling the carbs with seafoam and letting it sit for awhile, draining them and then running it and every time it seemed to run just a little bit better. But in the end they still needed to come off and be blown out.

My $40 honda filter is a cleanable one, I figured the old one was original to 1982. I will probably not have this bike long enough to change the filter again. I used to run K&N filters on my KZ1000 back in the early 80's.

Hey, did you run that Pontiac motor after that, I mean put it in a car or something and drive it? How long did it last and how did it run?

It wasn't my car. I freed the engine up for a friend. It was in a LeMans Sport and yes, he got a hood for it then did some fix-up and ran it for a couple years then sold it. Ran like a champ while he had it!

I have no idea what happened after he sold it.

About 15 years ago I related the same trick to members of the fire company I used to run with and they had success freeing up the engine on the 1946 Ahrens-Fox they had bought back from the Bloomsburg Fair Association. It had sat out in the weather since 1965 and was non-running since 1972. (A victim of hurricane Agnes) It's an ongoing restoration project but is in good enough shape now that it has been driven in several parades over the last 6 years!

Are you adding some Sea Foam to the gas tank as well as soaking the carbs?

I dump the sea foam in the gas and put some in the oil when I changed it.

I took some close up shots of this bike, it will have to post them here soon. Just so you don't get too excited about it.

One of the nicest things on it is the fairing, it had a really nice Honda emblem on the front, as I'm taking some pics of it this morning I notice that the emblem is gone. That must have been that thing that I had to cock my head over to the right to dodge as it flew by me on the road. Go figure.
I wrote Honda on it with a marker, it's all good now.

I like old "fixer" bikes.

My T350 Suzuki was one. The pipes were a combination of bluing, rust, scrapes and dents. The tank was dented and paint faded and oxidized. Chrome front fender was rust pitted. The seat had a huge crack in the middle of the passenger section and I "repaired" it with 2 1/2" white medical tape.

It looked friggin' bad.
BUT...........

The little fucker had some internal engine mojo going on! I routinely ate 500 cc bikes for lunch and kept up with quite a few 750's!

So with that in mind....it ain't what it looks like that matters.

OK, tell me I'm fucked in the head.
I'm still playing with this bike, I ordered some kreem, that gas tank sealer/coating stuff to line the tank and hopefully stop the rust, I also have on order a new gas filter and a new oil filter for spring, eh, JC Whitney had free shipping.
So, the fucked in the head part....so parts for a 30 year old bike might be hard to come by one day if you keep the 30 year old bike long enough, I see this ad on CL for 2 old CX's, an e-mail or two, a phone call, and I'm on my way to Pittsburgh, about 9 hours later I'm back home with two old beat up parts bikes.
Man, winter is just around the corner and I gotta get this shit all stacked in the barn and stored.I have a pile of side covers, mufflers, and odds and ends laying in a pile on the garage floor too that you can't see.
