NY Passes Gay Marriage Law <-- click for full story

ALBANY, New York—Same-sex marriage is now legal in New York after Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill that was narrowly passed by state lawmakers Friday, handing activists a breakthrough victory in the state where the American gay rights movement was born.

New York becomes the sixth state where gay couples can wed and the biggest by far.

Gay rights advocates are hoping the vote will galvanize the movement around the country and help it regain momentum after an almost identical bill was defeated here in 2009 and similar measures failed elsewhere in recent years. (click headline for the rest of the story)

I think it's about time! I see no reason on this earth why gay couples who are in love shouldn't marry and have the same rights under law as straight couples do.

I've always said that I don't give a shit what you are...if you work and live and pay taxes and contribute to society you should have the right to do anything anyone else can do.
Who really gives a fuck if it is called a marriage or a union. This bullshit about marriage being between a man and a women if fucked. My goddamn bicycle chain becomes married to the gears after a couple of years of working together. So what the fuck does the word married mean?

I really don't care if 2 women or 2 men want to be together as a couple. They want to be able to get married? Fine by me!

BUT.........DON'T go running around screaming for "special" treatment just because you're gay.

I think that the whole flaunt it to get attention thing is what offends most people and not the fact that someone is gay. Where's heterosexual pride day? Yeah....it would gather scoffs and ridicule. But look at the gay pride parades. Fuckin' freak shows on the streets and it's supposed to be just fine?

If you don't want prejudice against your preferences then STFU and cruise along with the flow!

Anyway......the far right will raise a stink and for fuck sake people......if you think the gays will burn in hell then leave it up to them to get toasty and you STFU as well!

(THIS coming from someone who is decidedly to the right of center!)

If it's so normal why is it called "Gay marriage" ?

True acceptance would do away with marriage altogether, and just make any people who domicile together to be equal and covered under any plans health or otherwise that the house decides to be covered under.

Why don't we just do away with marriage? that would solve all of the issues. no licensing, no certificates of marriage, no birth certificates none of that information gathering bullshit and money grubbing by the government.

No more married or single deduction BS from the tax man, everyone is just the same no matter how they chose to live relationship no relationship, all the same.
A resolution to avoid an evil is seldom framed till the evil is so far advanced as to make avoidance impossible.

It's called "Gay Marriage" because those who oppose it use that term to vilify it.

I agree with the whole do away with marriage in the context you state, Havoc. Well, sort of. People have been formally marrying since the stone ages and not until Christ was born and everyone got all holy did it become unacceptable to be gay. Gay's have been around from day one and no one batted an eye. I'm not even sure it has anything about it in the old testament either in the way we think of gay.

The term Gay I think is also self given by those who are gay.

Licensing, certs of marriage and tax bullshit are all what comes into something that should be private between two people because someone with sticky fingers found a way to take another chunk of what's ours. I also think that the insurance companies have quite a bit to do with why gay people should not be legally bound. Why should they pay out to such abominations? Just an excuse to stack the odds in their favor once again.

If two human beings love each other, who cares what makes them happy as long as it's not hurting others (IE: I'm happy to go out with my gun and massacre anyone in my path today).

I agree. Look back to biblical references of marriage. There are NO permissions from anyone, NO licenses, NO ceremonies etc. In those times it was "...and (enter name here) took (enter name here) into his tent and made her his wife"......

No divorce either. You just walked away from each other and that was that. NO support or alimony. If it happened then each was responsible to figure out how to carry on. The caveat there though is that people were expected to be honorable without legal intervention and do what was right by the other in an equitable manner.

Marriage licenses are nothing more than a way to tax someone's intentions.

If two people WANT to have a ceremony then go for it! If not then ok, be about your business. There is no religious ceremony for marriage in ANY christian bible. That ceremony was conceived by people in the middle ages to demonstrate their commitment to each other and it became a standard over time.

I'm pretty sure pagans had ceremonies as well. But yeah, most of the bullshit now stems from the Middle Ages and control of the people. Prey on the ignorant for self gain IMO.

I crack up at the argument against where some are saying that if we grant 'gays' to marry then what next? People marrying their dogs? I mean really! Just make it so it says two human beings and it settles the whole thing.
