0 I have also been thinking about it.
Have been told you need an area to keep them safe from predators as well as the elements. Very low maintenence. I have 2 1/2 acres and it would be more than enough room. Will you be raising them to eat or for eggs?

0 Just for eggs there is a guy at work that has a few I will have to ask him what he does. I have a small barn and was wondering how warm I would have to keep it in the winter.

0 Put them in the freezer in the winter and start over in the spring.
Really, chickens, all birds actually are dirty, dirty, animals. I'll leave the chickens to the chicken farmers.

0 Dylan raises chickens and knows tons about them.
Yes they are dirty but they also eat lawn bugs and TICKS. I used to let my hens roam free and kept a small area in the barn for them. They'd nest in the boxes I gave them and sometimes at night they'd roost in the trees. Your only problem will be foxes and owls and if you have bobcat, those too. I was actually thinking of getting a couple for eggs when the one dog finally goes. I have a dog run I can keep them in and I can string up wire across the top to keep them from getting out. Friggin pen is huge.
I have no idea what you're talking about so here's a bunny with a pancake on it's head

0 Just rake it into the lawn, Kim. If they are free range they'll spread the poop all over. It's actually very good fertilizer.

0 I'd be your best friend if I could get some eggs on a regular basis. Yum!

0 Now I'm thinking about all of the chicken shit all over the yard!!!
I'm going with the nice clean eggs from the store. Beside that I can't have chicken were I live. OH, we can't have goats either.

0 Dirty birds, dirty, dirty, dirty. Shit and feathers.
I was in the Wal-mart the other day looking for some boneless skinless chicken breastages. Everything in there was the Perdue jumbo size, hand fed, steroid chicken, expensive as hell, I search around and finally found the chicken that I saw on 20/20 being thrown at the wall by the chicken farmers. That was much cheaper. |
