All the newer Ford F series are having transmission issues because they are putting 6 cylinder engines in them unless you pay extra for the 8, but if you're going to have a truck that works you really need a manual transmission. NO ONE is offering manual anymore and that's a damn shame. Lots of recalls on the new F series for the trannys not holding up. No shit.
Funny thing, I have a friend who is an engineer at Ford. I need to have him start telling them their latest designs are not holding up to the task!
The big recall on Ford transmissions, some 1.5 million vehicles 2011 to 2013 will not affect anything currently. That 6 speed transmission is no longer in use. I could find no current recalls of the current 10 speed transmission they are using.
The demise of the manual transmission can be laid at the feet of efficiency. New modern transmissions with multiple gears allow manufacturers to keep the engine RPM's in a much tighter controlled range, allowing them to better tune for economy there. Newer computer controls available have only compounded this. Towing capacity of automatics has been higher than manuals for literally decades.
While I personally do not like slush boxes, there really is no data that says they are less reliable or more prone to breakage.
