They are attempting to goad you into taking action, by using your own sense of morality against yourself. After all, you are partially to blame for enjoying all the benefits of a society you inhabit. It is your duty to make the world better. Even if you do this with yourself, it is not enough, and must be carried out for the good of the larger whole.
I see this all the time when I go into a retail store, or grocery. When I arrive at the counter to pay for what I want, I get hit upon to contribute to this, or that, and it is done in such a manner that I am supposed to feel guilt for not showing my altruism to people, animals, environment, or whatever cause de Jure at the moment.
As a heartless son of a bitch, who has taken enough, I loudly proclaim that I am having enough trouble taking care of myself, and if I do contribute, it will be through my church. That shuts them up immediately. It seems that the tougher the times, the more I get hit up for not contributing more to the Collective. If I do, I will contribute it somewhere where it used most efficiently. Someplace like the Salvation Army, which has the most efficient chartable system of them all.
