My friend lives in North Carolina and she gets texts and notices from her electric company telling her to cut back due to the strain on the grid.
They're telling them to turn off the hot water heater (takes more energy to reheat the damn thing), don't bake, turn down your heat, don't use a fireplace, don't take baths, whatever. Read the link. It's absurd.

Personally I find it to be a bunch of bullshit. She says "it's different down here". I still call bullshit.

I think she's getting ripped off (along with everyone else down there).

Kbear lives down there and she's never said a word about shit like this. I think Trudi has people or friends there and Trudi, can you chime in if they get notices like this?

This is for extreme cold conditions she says.

Please discuss.

My friend Ashley lives down there, and he doesn't get that shit. Sounds like strong-arm tactics to me... if the grid can't support the working load in the winter, then upgrade the fucking grid!

If the water is hot, you don't need a heater for it. Just sayin...

Nobody ever wants to foot the bill for an upgrade like that.

Edit: I went and read the notice. It's not about the grid, it's about the supply. They don't think they will have the generation capacity. Not sure why the concern, they can buy extra electricity off of the nationwide grid. That makes it seem a little weirder to me...

I dont think its bs, simply because if they tell you to cut back on your electrical use than they are cutting back on the money they are making off you. I dont see the benefit in them telling someone to cut back for them.

The company that you pay monthly for electricity is not the only supplier. I know here in NJ you can choose who the supplier to your company is, but you still pay your bill to say, JCP&L or PSE&G. They just get the supply from any one of these suppliers.

I'm with Biker - they need to step up and find a place to supplement their supply to their customers. Telling people to cut their water heater off for 4 hours is bullshit. The tank will cool down and it takes just as much energy to warm that back up as it does to keep it steady.

If I lived there and this shit happened, I'd be rounding up a crowd and making a huge stink.

Conservation is one thing, but forcing conservation because they can't handle the demand and shutting down power all together is another.

Our power company here does nothing of the sort as far as notices like that go. Sadly the power companies in this part of the country pretty much have a monopoly in their area. You don't get a choice.

That being said I don't think they can legally cut you off as long as your paying your bill on time, short of setting up a Tesla Coil or a Stargate in your backyard and running it 24/7.

As far as NJ suppliers go, I know they buy power from MetEd, ConEd and PPL Co to name a few. There are electricity co-operatives in NC and your friend may be a part of one of those. Sounds more like what one of them would do as opposed to a conventional type supplier.

Well she won't even read the opinions of this thread, which was the sole purpose I posted it here. She said all of NC has this issue in the winter as they are "Not equipped to handle the cold or snow" which I find to be a load of shit.

NC is not so far south as not to experience cold weather in the winter. This winter is just particularly cold everywhere.

It just galls me that they threaten you with loss of power for "overloading" the demand if you don't conserve. Fuck that. I'd turn it all up and all at once too.

They really don't seem to be equipped to deal with it, more than 1/4 inch of snow or ice and this place goes to hell. Not just power, everything.
