Ahha, here is the video of the crowded sidewalk, and the difficulty of taking down this highly dangerous individual. And how many shots were fired by these two courageous policemen,...........fourteen right?

Opps, sorry: 16 rounds

Quote:Police officers fired a total of 16 rounds; one officer shot nine while another one shot seven, the New York Police Department said.

An investigation is under way, authorities said.

Well, lets hope so. Of course someone is going to have to take the fall for all this embarrassment, since Chief Kelly and Mayor Doomberg are immune from it all.

There is obviously a moral to all this. Perhaps the one about ensuring one gets no closer than 100 meters to a (New York)policeman?

They're pretty awful shots then. 3 rounds went into the perp. The rest, well that's shameful. These guys need to go to the range more and practice because passers by shouldn't have been hit.

There is NOTHING in that video that shows the cops shooting wildly though. IMO it seems like they did the right thing, they're just bad at aiming.

Its confirmed 9 people were injured by the police and bloomberg in his speech after the shooting just wrote it off as "non life threatening injuries " and they are now just focusing on quick recoveries.
You of course can have non life threatening injuries from gun shot wounds, a shattered hip bone by a bullet is usually non life threatening but it can ruin your ability to function. I bet more then half those cops rarely take out their gun except to qualify annually. To most cops its just another tool on their belt, and its just part of the job, I hope this changes peoples minds. That it lets them see regulation fucked the average citizen over in this situation, and they work toward changing some of those stupid ass laws.

Eh, while I am happy to make fun of their shooting, in the back of my mind is trying to engage a target with people around. Sorta raises the stakes. They do need to practice more, because that is when they need to be on their game.

What are the chances of bullets ricocheting off the buildings or sidewalk, lampost etc? (honest question, I don't know) Could a person get hit with a bullet like that?

Usually the streets in mid-town Manhattan are literally, shoulder to shoulder with people. Summer it's worse with all the tourists and then there's the traffic - which is bumper to bumper all day long. Traffic moves, but it's just that congested.

Yeah but in NY the slightest bang or boom everyone scatters real fast,I think if people were getting hit by ricocheting bullets bloomberg would have mentioned it to lessen the heat on the cops involved. If they ever let out pictures of the actual wounds its pretty easy to tell. The wounds would look like little dots or cuts in the skin where as bullets look like a perfect hole and there is alot of tissue damage.

I am not going to chide them too much given the crowd factor. It's easy for armchair cops and soldiers to point out "you're not doing it right". It also doesn't excuse the fact they obviously didn't train very well for crowds, didn't practice their aim, and didn't practice controlling their fire.

However, there is a DELICIOUS irony and schadenfreude in this given Mayor Bloomfuck's political and gun control inclinations. His vaunted foot soldiers and enforcers are out fucking up the peasantry he claims to protect!

At the end of the day, I am not going to go overboard in criticizing these cops. I think they know they are in some shit enough already.

Considering what Anthony pointed out about many cops not practicing enough, I'll add in that should not be allowed. It should be that there is a mandatory minimal amount of range time each month they have to abide by. I also think its a disgrace to see grossly overweight cops on the force as well. If you're going to be officer McPiggy you better be much better with your aim since you're too fat to get out of your own way.

"But that's discrimination twitch!" lol I am just kidding if the heavy cops can perform the required tasks its ok but I know once you are obese you cant keep up with the criminals and the job. I agree gunnen there is a level of understanding needed for the cops situation there are retarded people that will run through the center of a gun fight when panicked. They had a study on NBC and when people panic they do not pay attention and they will run right past the gunman's barrel and even the cops barrels. That said 9 people getting shot by accident happened because lack of self control and remembering the four rules of gun safety.

All guns are always loaded.
Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.

They broke all the rules, regardless of who you are or the power of the law you posses your compassion and respect for human life should make you think before you squeeze the trigger.

I've never been in the situation myself, but I imagine when someone is pointing a gun back at you all that gun range hold your breath and squeeze shit goes out the window. Those cops were fucking scared just like anyone else.
