The first Norwegian Icebreaker heads up the Mississippi

As you may have seen on the news, it's been very cold in Iowa, so cold in fact that we have borrowed a Norwegian Icebreaker from Minnesota to unclog the Mississippi starting over near Davenport and working its way north. Here is the first picture of it as it begins the hard work required to break up the ice.

I once did the "sit in a sauna then jump into a freezing cold lake" thing in Trondheim in Norway.

When I hit the water I felt so cold I almost forgot how to swim, my bodily organs all felt like they were shutting down, I scrambled to the riverbank thinking only one thing "LIVE!"

They used to have Swedish Dips at the YMCA here. I don't know if they still do but you take a steam and then jump into the pit of ice water.

We have the Polar Bear club here too. Every New Years Day they go to the beach at Coney Island and take a freezing swim.

Cold water will kill you faster than fire. Your organs were probably shutting down. Moving in freezing water only circulates the cold and kills you faster.

This is the only thing I could say for about 45 minute afterward.

"uuuuuh, uuuuuh, uuuuuh". As I swam for the riverbank I was so cold I almost gave up and let myself sink to the bottom.

Yes, you're lucky you weren't too far out to make it to the bank and live. Everyone makes fun of me when I don't want to swim in my own pool when the water is too cold. Sorry, if it's cold enough to turn my lips blue, the freakin' water is too damn cold.
