If you're talking about the bass, that's the back of the instrument and it is most assuredly maple, if you are talking about the guitar on top, that's a 1955 Gretsch. I would bet my house that it is not spruce.

Wow I totally mixed up what images I was referring to and what I was actually looking at while I was typing. The back and ribs should be maple your right, the top which is the front or part that faces out to audience etc. After looking at the unfinished picture of it I am not too sure it could be Fir. The grain seems a little dark for that. As far as I know the front needs to be a flexible wood to get it to resonate properly, so it helps narrow down the types a little. I'll have to try and get in touch with my old band mate and see if he can give me some more info on wood types for double basses.

Here's the latest progress with the bass:

Clear coat is on, just waiting to cure and then a final buffing.

The fingerboard, looking awesome with the stain applied.

Almost finished!

You know I'm a music retard, but that does look sharp. I never noticed before how the neck does not lay flat down onto the body.

Can you believe he's only charging us $950. for that restore?

Twist - yep, way far away too. Think of it as an 'old fashioned pick up' Biggrin
