We've ALWAYS taught our pets, dog, cat, fish thats its unacceptable to be on the table or counter or anyplace we may put food. If we are sitting at the table and we have on of them on our lap the most they even try and we let them is smell. Not our food but just the table. A few times the cat would jump up on the counter or maybe the table and usually a slap of the hands was all that was needed. A few times she would try to ignore the command or our voice until she saw us move to get up and she flat hauled her butt OFF. Not one of them would EVER try to take food off of your plate. ONLY out of your hand. In fact, our Yorkie WILL NOT eat from a plate or a bowl. Off of the floor only. He acts as though hes afraid of it. He drinks from a bowl easy enough. He always eats our dinner. He eats about anything we do including vegatables.

It's rare that any of my animals get "people" food. Most of the cats won't eat people food if I do give it to them and the dogs are pigs, they'll eat anything I give them but it's ALWAYS in their own dishes after we are through eating.

I also have always fed the animals before we eat. It is an old Jewish custom I got in the habit of when I was a teenager.

The cat would NEVER eat any of our food, even tuna. She may on occasion take a piece of chicken or fish or tuna but only a small piece or two. She loved her hard food. She would'nt even eat canned cat food. The dog IS a hog. He always eats what we have. When we're done we'll fix his and at some point in time he eats it. Not right away usually.

Our dog ALWAYS has food in her dish. We always keep it full and she has never ever overeaten. She is only allowed in one room in our house, the family room, so stealing from the table is not a problem. I cannot stomach animal hair around the house.

Thats why I get breeds that don't shed. Even our cat we had shed very little. Lucky I guess.
