They have been threatening to close it down for over 10 years. I doubt that it will happen because its become a part of the economy for Ashland and Mt Carmel.
Hell the Pioneer Tunnel tour wouldn't get as much traffic as it does if they closed off the Centralia site.
Idiot kids have been getting hurt there since day one when the highway was still open for traffic! Rt 61 was reopened after the first subsidence swallowed a 1967 Ford Country Squire station wagon! They "fixed it" and it was business as usual for another 3 years until the fire actually moved under the road. For quite some time they didn't have to plow or treat that section because the road surface never dropped below 67 degrees.
