What occurred is exactly the reason why noncoms and officers, during the 17th-19th century used to tell the troops to get out of the way of any cannon ball that happened to be bouncing on the ground. Even if it looked like it was spent, trying to use your boot to stop it would most likely case you to lose your foot in the process.

Those things still have a lot of mass in one small package. And they still cause a lot of damage even though they have already landed.
