She had once explained you have to pass tests in a graduation upwards to ride bigger bikes as well.

I followed the licensing thread but I just wasn't sure on the riding gear.

Certainly not like here. Go take the test, pass and ride the biggest mo-fo you want to.

I wonder what the UK authorities think about bikes like the Suzuki Hyabusa and Kawasaki Ninja? Probably makes them shit themselves just reading the specs. Better yet, what about a Boss Hoss? Since the most popular engine for the Hoss is a Chevy 350 it converts to 5,735 cc's.

Trudi, is it a requirement to wear the full suit or just something that everyone does there?

To ride a motorbike of any size it is law to wear a 'safety helmet' of a specified standard.
If you are sensible you buy the best and highest standard which can cost in the region of £100 to £300 pounds. Phil's in the photo he has just bought cost him (rather Granny) £145 (discounted because he is so well known in the shop by £30). It has a double sun visor, visor hinge jaw and blue-tooth (not that he uses it for the phone). Mine is due to be replaced, I'm hoping it will stretch to next year since it cost me £110, 2 years ago. The shop can test them for structure safety.
Mark rode in America and Bermuda and hates wearing all the gear. He bought a helmet for £30, which is legal standard.

He only wears the protective leggings if its going to be a long, fast trip, otherwise it his jeans, although he always wears decent bike boots, ordinary boots get ruined. He wears a boned, 3 season jacket only because I bought it for him, he will revert to his leather jacket in hot weather. Today we were out in the Purbecks (I was pillion) as we hit 80mph I saw he wasn't wearing gloves Most bikers have at least two pairs with them on a trip (in case one gets lost or damaged) both pairs of his 'street-fighters' were in the bike!
I've got some really girlie summer gloves, and two pairs of 'street-fighters', winter and dual season (which are double lined).

To take your test you have to be correctly equipped, so everyone has to wear the correct gear before the examiner will even look at the bike. You are regarded as a total twit to wear anything less than leathers or at least some protective gear.
Sadly there are still some who bomb about town in shorts and t-shirt and helmet. They are usually scooter riders and on their first bike, so think it 'cool' not to wear the gear...........until they come off.

You never see those at Bike Night, they get stopped at the 'gates' and shown some wonderful photo's by the police and the paramedics. Funnily enough when Phil passed his complete test the school he was with gave him a book which was to help him in further riding, insurance and the dangers. The centre pages was of a beautiful pin-up girl.....after she came off her boyfriends Harley at 30mph wearing just a swim-suit and t-shirt in Florida.

I must get on with my final test. Next year I hope..sigh...I've seen a bike I would really like to ride. A new Enfield, they are being built with an electric start in India again.
