Looks cool, but how do you know how it sounds when buying on e-bay, or can you tell by the set up on it??

Something like this you wouldn't know how it sounds. Given the wood and pickups used it should sound rather good.

This would be one that you simply hope sounds good and would buy just to have in case it doesn't.
As far as other instruments you would buy on eBay, you should go to a music store and try one then if you choose, buy it at auction.

Personally I prefer to get my guitars from a shop where I can try the particular one I might buy. I went on a 2.25 hour drive to get my Rickenbacker even though ALL Rics have the same sound and feel since they are handmade to precision specs.

I just thought that this custom looked really cool and unique!

That's kinda what I thought. It would be about the same thing with a bicycle, you can look at components and know if it is good stuff on it or not, and if it is good it is at least fixable. But there is no substitute for hands on.

So true.

I refuse to buy a stereo that I can't listen to prior to purchase. Same goes for TVs......gotta be able to see the picture and hear the sound quality or no sale! I won't buy a deck chair that I can't give a "test sit" either.

I want to give a physical look see at most appliances (large and small) before I buy too unless it's something made by Cuisinart or Kitchen Aid. I damn sure KNOW the quality I'm getting with both of those brands and both have no hassle return policies should I simply not like the device!
