Almost to the end of a week away from work.
My bike is legal again with a new tyre AND since the brake pads fell out and broke it also has new front pads. Thursday we all rode over to Weymouth (my home town and hosting the Olympic sailing etc) to a bike meeting only on the way home I got this really annoying squeak. No1 son also pointed out my chain was very slack!

So today when he got home from work he let me borrow his tools to do the chain (only I wanted him to supervise me 'cos its been a very long time since I did something like this). I couldn't get it right, too loose, too loose, too tight! Try again.
The washing needed to go out.........did that finger prints all over it
It was a white wash.

Finally got the approval on the chain, tightened the wheel. Still had the squeak
Then No1 son saw although I had new brake pads Mark had only put one new one in and an old one back! I tried to fix the new one in, but really struggled so Mark came along and took the front wheel off (?) Phil' said I didn't need to
Needed to put piggies to bed because the wind came up strong again. Um...Stratos is now black and white- oops!
Anyway two new pads in and...........the front wheel is stiff. No1 son says 'it's ok mum, just go steady around corners'

Just going to check my life insurance.

The key to tightening your chain is to take equal slack from both sides in very small increments each time then rotate the wheel before checking tension. Otherwise you will find it tight on the top and loose on the bottom or tight enough then it will loosen when you adjust the side opposite the sprocket. I usually adjust the opposite side first and then the sprocket side. It may just be my perception but it seems that I get proper tension in less adjustment that way.

As far as the disc pads. You should completely compress the piston before installing the new pads. If you don't you may not be able to get both new ones to fit over the rotor.

Thanks Traz.

Philip redid the brakes for me and double checked the chain. Last time I can remember doing a chain was possibly in 1982 when Mark was away on a course with the Army, so you can see why I wasn't too confident.

Bless him he also washed my bike while he was doing his Fireblade. He sold it yesterday and wanted it looking good before the guys came to collect it. They can't come until next weekend now.
