My dead, ex brother-in-law had a nice scam going with the Army. He joined the Army two weeks after it went voluntary. At the time, he was able to pick where he wanted to be stationed. He picked Germany. Eddie was a junkie. He stayed clean long enough to pass the army physical and get out of boot camp and overseas. Once there, he hooked up with the dealers for that heroin Germany was famous for back then and got out on a Section 8 medical.
Fucker received benefits for life and lived high on the hog off Uncle Sam. Never managed to kick his addiction and would drive us crazy with his little OD episodes every holiday. Asshole would OD in the phone booth in front of the VA hospital on Staten Island, call an ambulance and his father telling them where he is and what he did. He finally offed himself in 1990 in a VA hospital while under suicide watch. He had a big life insurance policy from the Army too. He had it split between his live-in girlfriend and his brother.
