You could also be crippled in the long run.
My lower back was totally fucked and it got to the point that the disk was gone but it was in a spot on my back that has all the weight bearing on it and what saved me from being crippled was that it was continuously breaking and not allowing it to set on the nerves and spinal cord. The doc said it was a mess in there when he got in there.
My regret was not doing the surgery fast enough. I'd not be in the shape I'm in now if I did. The residual damage is far worse than a few plates, screws and cages.
