I keep LOTZ of water in bowls spread around the house so that the puddy tats are never far from a drink.

If a bowl is empty one of them usually lets me know it and I, or someone else in the house will refill it. Result: well hydrated and happy kitties!

I like the self rekiance that cats have because it allows me to leave them alone for a few days if need be by simply leaving an ample supply of food in bowls and ditto for water. I can leave my "herd" alone for 3 or 4 days without having someone come check on them. For longer periods I simply have a friend stop by to refill the bowls and give them a bit of attention.

End result? I come home to kitties that have missed me but are quite happy and healthy.

Well, we heard back from the landlord today, and there'll be no kitty for Sarah till she buys a house! I could argue with her, mainly cause the woman down stairs has a cat - but that risks exposing a kitty squatter (ie, not known on the leaseSmile ), and I don't want to be responsible for making that cat or his owner homeless.
Ah well, patience is a virtue...

Aw, that sucks Sarah. I'd suggest a hamster but I think they're illegal in Australia too. They consider them vermin. But you're allowed rats. I know for a fact they're illegal in New Zealand (hamsters that is).

How about a guinea pig? I can't imagine living without some kind of pet.

no chance - when Brian talked to her, he didn't even mention a cat - he just asked if we would be allowed a pet, she just said no pets - no hesitation, no "I'll ask the owner" or any thing of the sort.

I have considered getting something small and inconspicuos, but if for any reason the owner or landlord need to access the apartment, we'd be in trouble.

I've been doing the math and I reckon that by May of next year, possibly sooner, we should have our deposit for our house, so I'll just have to wait till then.

Its so depressing living without animals I've never been with out some sort of critter! Maybe I'll buy a plant to talk to...
