This had nothing to do with the communist/socialist/progressive bullshit about forcing manufacturers to stop making many incandescent bulbs.  Plain and simple it was about saving money.


I did see a pretty sizeable drop in my electric bill.  You could get the same equivalent light that a 60w incandescent bulb would give for a cost of only 14w.  The problem though is that they don't work well in a colder environment (outdoors, basement, refrigerator/freezer) and they don't allow for some configurations of desk and table lamps due to their taller stance.


Enter the LED bulb.  At first they were way too expensive to be practical.  Now they have come down in price to be pretty close to CFL bulbs.  The advantages?  Temperature doesn't matter, they don't get very warm at all and what I like is the same amount of light has gone from 60w (standard) to 14w (CFL) to 8.5w (LED).
That might not seem like much but extend that out.


Say you run an average of 4 lights for 5 hours total each day.  That is 20 watt/hours.  With standard lights you use 60w per bulb x 4 = 240 watts.  240 x 5 = 1200.  That's 1.2 kW hrs the electric company will bill for.
Go to CFL and it comes out to 240 watts or .24 kW hrs.
LED figures to 170 watts or .17 kW hrs.


Pretty much with the LED bulbs you could let EVERY light in the house on all night and only use about the same amount of juice that just 4 standard bulbs for 5 hours would eat up.


As well the LED bulbs do come in a dimmable configuration (CFL doesn't) and three way configuration (again CFL doesn't).  PLUS.......LED bulbs do not contain mercury so if you break one (and that isn't likely since their shell is plastic not glass) you don't need a haz-mat crew to clean it up!


You bet your ass I'm changing over to LED.  They also come in 25, 40, 60, 75, 90 and 100 watt equivalents as well as par 38 and 56 equivalent spot and flood lights.
Hell with as cheap as they operate I can actually USE the counter lights in my kitchen again.  I have 6 recessed fixtures above the wrap around counter and running standard bulbs was a real energy pig.  6 x 60 was 360 watts draw when they were on.  LED will only be 51 watts.   That's less than running just ONE standard lamp.

The old one (old faithful) has been degrading in performance over the last 4 or 5 years.  And no wonder since it was manufactured in January of 1985!  Barb got it used in 1995 and has been toting it from home to home ever since.  When we bought this house it git a 2 year break as we hadn't decided exactl where and how to mount it.  It was a 16,000 BTU window/through wall unit and we finally decided to remove the somewhat useless horizontal slide open window in the kitchen and simply go with a blank panel with a cut-out for the air conditioner.

This works very well and was in the right position that when assisted by a ceiling fan and small stand fan air circulates through the front part of the house and helps cool the living room which is on the opposite end.

Eventually we figured out how to use small window units in the batroom and bedrooms in concert with old faithful and 2 more fans to cool the entire house to where some guests complained about it being TOO cold.

Since we now have relegated the smallest bedroom to a storage/craft area we no longer have an air conditioner there and the door stays closed.  Maxine also keeps her room closed now and has her own air conditioner set to where she is comfortable. 

This changed the circulation pattern a bit but also cut the need for one of the fans.  As a result of old faithful fading in its old aged state we weren't getting that chilly willy cooling anymore.

Toward the end of last year's cooling season one of our friends decided to sell her big air conditioner as she said it wasn't working like she thought is should and it was just too "noisy" for her.  Mind you it cooled the entire bottom floor of her old farmhouse.  Not cooling well enough?  Ooooook! Paid her $60 and toted it home.  It sat until yesterday when we gat a friend to come helpe take the old one out and modify the opening to fit this one in.  (bigger casing)

While doing the opening cutting Barb looked and saw that the unit had all kinds of dust and dirt on the intake side and condenser venting as well as the temp probe being all mucky.  Well no wonder it wasn't "working like it should".

End result?  This thing not only cools the hell out of everything,  it has a better vent directing setup and we now also cool the "void space" we had at the kitchen table!

Up to now it's been an excellent range and its more than paid for itself. I bought it new when I bought the house. I figured that after 16 years of heavy use it deserves to have a problem. Since it's that old I decided to shop for a new range.

At the same time (unbeknownst to me) my mortgage company was adjusting my escrow account. The previous mortgage holders were way overcharging me and there was a surplus. By law every year they are supposed to adjust and anything over $50.00 in excess must be refunded to me. Yeah...it was over $50.00. How about $1902.22!

I figured on replacing the range at tax time but with this check arriving the time was NOW.

I looked at several nice ones and counted on between $750 and $1100.
I found one that lists for $1100 but it was on SUPER SALE at Lowe's. Nice 5 burner 5.8 cu ft convection oven model from Samsung.
Regular price $1099.00.....sale price $649.00 delivered.

Called my local store and they had ONE in stock so I had them put a hold on it for me till I could get out there later in the day. They had no open delivery slots for yesterday so I have to wait till next Saturday for it. (Big fat hairy deal considering the price!)

This thing is full featured and I can hardly wait to fire it up!

Christmas dinner just got lots easier for me!!!!! ]]>
On Thanksgiving day it wouldn't build up to temperature so I had to get creative and use the broiler section then manually turn it on and off to make the giant assed (31 lb) turkey.

The planter has 3 giant strawberry plants that will be transplanted to the garden proper as well. I decided to dedicate that whole north side strip to them.

Dont' tell me the lawn needs tending. I know this already

Yesterday was add soil to the garden day. We need to bring the grade up about 6 inches. So, I send Matt to the dump to get a truck load of soil while I prepare the house for things to come.

I lifted the strawberries and set them aside. Prepped the berry row for new plants and transplanting the blackberry bush.

Picked weeds out of the lawn o' rocks and cleaned up the lilly beds around the yard. Loosened soil in the post around the pergola and flowers and fed them.

Everything went smoothly. Poor Matt shoveled dirt onto the truck until his arms burned and turned to jelly. Then he had to do it again when he got home. Sadly, we can't get the truck into the yard and just dump it out like we were able to on my farm.

So we get the whole thing done and we're short about 4 wheelbarrow's full. I can't spread what's there and "make it work" because it's really very low below grade and it will take too much away from the finished areas.

We headed to Home Depot for the plastic to put over it and some other things, paint swatches and what not. I figured that we'll just pick up a couple bales of top soil there instead of making him go to the dump for more. They don't sell big bales of soil, only peat moss which I don't need.

Poor Matt has to hit the dump again.

Today is paint day for the nuclear room! Well, finish priming it day. Still can't decide on a color scheme. Every time I bring home a bunch of swatches and look at it in the light of the room they look "off". I want some kind of very light gray that will look good with the blue molding coming from the hallway and living room, but they all turn pinkish, greenish or bluish once home in natural light. Why do they always show paint swatches in florescent light in the store? Idiots.
I'm at the point where I am thinking of doing the ceiling in a dark gray and leaving the walls white/off white. I dont' want dark walls in that tiny room.

I am freakin' exhausted, in pain and [insert whining of all sorts here]. Matt's out on a side job and I must forge ahead! I want that room done. I'm thinking of tearing out a wall and making my bedroom bigger now. Matt cringes at the thought.

It's cold and rainy here. Twist is getting a blizzard. I had to bring plants that are not in the ground yet into the house because of the weather.

Cats can smell catnip before you put it on a shelf! Now plants are safe in the basement.

LCD displays are an excellent choice for rooms without alot of ambient light. Being as the blacks are darker, there is not much need for illumination in the background.

LED displays are by far the most integrated tv yet. While there are still some liquid crystal throughout the tv, Light Emitting Diodes are what power the picture in this display.

My 2 X method of determining a tv size doesn't apply to LED tv's.

LED displays are by far the most integrated tv yet. While there are still some liquid crystal throughout the tv, Light Emitting Diodes are what power the picture in this display.

My 2 X method of determining a tv size doesn't apply to LED tv's.

What I am going to do is move all the cabinets up to the ceiling. Since these are on a track on the wall, it's very easy to do. Following the install instructions when we built them, we realized after the counters were in there isn't enough room under the counters for appliances. We moved one cabinet up already and it looks much nicer.

But I need to paint this thing. It's overdue. I have a really nice cantaloupe orange I picked out - I'm talking the exact color of the fruit's flesh.

I need to replace a lot of tiles on the floor too, now the dog is gone. He had really hard nails and managed to chip some of them and there is a nasty funk from using Future Floor Polish on them that will not come off. I fought the company and they insist it's the floor. No it's not. I've seen this before. I have spare tiles downstairs.

Anyway, the kitchen is a very small space. It won't really be a blast of orange. I am so undecided if I should paint the ceiling the same color as the walls or stay with my usual white ceilings like the rest of the house.

Does anyone have a SF where they come from?
We have a HUGE one in MN. It's all about the food. Deep fried Twinkies, chocolate dipped bacon, deep fried alligator, turkey drumsticks, corn on the cob, pronto pups, deep fried snicker bars just to name a few.

I haven't been in close to 10 years but it's a beautiful day and I am trying to con the old man into going. If I make it I will take many pix of all the fairgoers. The people watching is even better than it is at Wal-Mart.]]>
