My lady and I recently had to put down an 11 year old Yorkie (very young, they easily live into mid to high teens when healthy - with the oldest on record living to be 26) due to health problems. Many of them were stemming from, or related to, his having Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CCDS), also known as Dog Dementia. This was heartbreaking for us, because if we had even known this was a thing, we would have realized he was suffering from it for over a year before it got bad enough that we realized something was wrong with him. We just thought the weird behaviors were just him being him since he was always a bit odd with behavior.

PetMD has a great article on CCDS, and I recommend everyone with dogs read it. Save yourself the heartache that we suffered.

Yesterday while Barb made a trip to the pharmacy I was sitting here just web surfing a bit before getting ready to head to band practice when she got back.

Rufus and Gunner were out back on the deck and they started barking their heads off. Now there's a black rabbit running around (used to be the neighbor's pet but he kept escaping the hutch) and whenever he hops through the yard the pups make sure he knows they are there. I figured bunny boy was passing by and gave it no second thought.

I hear Barb come up the hill and go to the mailbox and the dogs stopped barking. Nothing out of the ordinary there.

Next thing I know she comes through the door with THIS:

He was evidently dropped off sometime earlier that morning. He came running to Barb and wanted to hop right into the pickup.

He likes cats, has been fed decently, has no collar mark, tattoo or chip. We looked around for missing dogs fitting his description and asked some nearby friends if they knew of anyone missing a dog. Bupkiss!

Now we really didn't want another dog but..........given that we're 99% sure he was dumped.....*sigh* his name is now Victor and he fits right in with the kitties and his "new brother pups" took right to him.

He's very friendly and gentle and seems to think the sun shines out of my ass. Within 2 hours he started answering to his new name.

Call us a couple of suckers but he's too nice of a pup to take to a shelter.

We think he's a Rottie/Pittie mix and around 5-6 months old.

Last week Barb stumbled upon and ad for a puppy we might be interested in.
Ever since Bruce disappeared Rufus has been a little lonely even though the kitties are his pals.
I've been missing the 2 dog dynamic in the house myself and was searching for a suitable pup since around December. This fella seemed to be a nice fit for us and so we responded to the ad. We did wonder why he was listed as only $100 and the owner explained that he really wasn't....he was FREE. Has shots and been treated for fleas, ticks etc. We wormed him and will be taking him for the only shot he's missing (rabies).

We had a little over a 2 hour drive to go meet him and them bring him home. He's only 4 1/2 months old and never had a long car ride. He lasted an hour before getting car sick. Much better than I expected and WAY better than what Barb counted on. (30 and 15 mins respectively) And he lasted another hour between incidents. Pretty good for his first long ride.

He's a mix of German Shepherd and Irish Setter (Mom Shepherd...Dad Setter) but he looks a bit like a Lab.

This is one of the pics from the ad:

We had to put the dog down last night. After the fiasco Tuesday she just was miserable all week. We just had to wait for the other vet who knows us to be on call at the ER and take her in.

After discussing what happened Tuesday with Dr. Laura, she said the other guy just is a big "mush" and always tries to go that one last effort even when she brings in her own animals for it.

We're having her cremated so she can sit on the shelf next to Goliath and she probably in doggy heaven ripping his face of now.

It's so quiet in the house. I miss my morning "party".

Daisy's bathroom trash stash.

She's been at this for awhile. I thought it would be funny to show you guys what she does before I clean it up this time.
We were watching TV and we catch her sneaking out from the bedroom, ever so quietly, and then into the bathroom to go "shopping" in the trash bin. Paper. She just loves paper.

She has a space under my (gigantic) bed where she sleeps/dens and here is where she has stashed her loot. We also found a couple of lost cat bowls.

Sorry the pic is all blurry.

Here she is amongst her stash:

And here is what it looks like without her all snuggled in the mess.

I really wish I took before images of this thing.

Few weeks ago I took a free dog house off Craigslist. It was in really good condition but it was orange and it had a few scars on the floor where the original tenant scratched it up.

So I bought some paint and some new roofing materials, flipped the floorboards so the good side is up and I refurbished it.

I made her a lame little name shingle and shellacked that and stuck it to the wall with carpet tape

Just need to hit Home Depot for some foam and some water resistant materials to cover it for her to lie on and she's got herself a nice little den to hang out in.

Damn dog in her old age is getting to be the worst dog in the world.
She's been stealing off the counters.
Stealing out of pockets and lunch bags belonging to Matt.
And she decided that she would destroy a door to get into the cat room today.

Keep in mind this was an absolute angel of a dog with the exception of sneaking onto the furniture when we went out. Now she's a destructive, spiteful bitch.

Brand new cat flap and brand new doorknob with lock. She couldn't push the door open nor could she open the handle so she decided to CHEW the metal so it now has a few rough edges and she shredded the flap and the surrounding border on the door.

The only thing keeping me from giving too much of a shit over this is that door is slated to be replaced, jamb and all when we remodel that room this winter.

For now, we have to live with our ghetto door.

I think she's started this for the attention because when we go out on long days we started having the guy across the street let her out every few hours. Spiteful bitch.

Happened to a personal friend of mine in South Carolina:

Quote:Got woke up by the kids screaming saturday morning. Went down and pulled my dog out of a ditch, this was a trained, AKC Brittany spaniel. It was still alive when I got there, multiple bites, none looked life threatening. Carried him home to clean up the wounds, cleaned and patched one side, flipped him over and Im looking at a kindey and intestines. Figured this was more than I could handle, saw he was going into shock. Took him to the Vet ($70.00 dollar emergency fee for a saturday) vet is concerned with how far in shock he is, says they would need to keep him for over a week just to stabilize him and the survival rate was less than 50%. Got an estimate of at least $800 not including the surgery for the hurneia, the antibiotics, the stiches, or the adrenaline to get his heart rate back up. Told me id have to decide to put him down or get going on stabilizing. Stepped outside to call the wife, by the time I made it back in he was dead. Followed by a half hour of convulsions the vet told me was his brain trying to jump start his body. Bad start to the day. Took him home, made a pyre. He was a good dog, we had just spent the day before hunting dove squirell and rabbit. Drove down to the "neighbor" that one of the offending dogs lived at. Knock knock.....knock knock.... Black lady answers the door:

Me: "Is the man of the house at home?"
Lady: "No, who the hell are you"
Me: "A neighbor, Your dog just killed my dog"
Lady: "Thats not my dog its a stray"
Me: "That dog right there? The one sleeping under your car, the one Ive seen in your yard for the past year?"
Lady: "Its a stray"
Me: "So you dont mind if I shoot it dead?"
Lady: Closes door *muffled* "Im going to call the cops"
Me: "I already did"
Lady: Door opens "Thats not my..." POP POP
Me: Drags dog to ditch, gets in car, drives home to burn dog

Never did hear from the cops

I do not advocate the shooting of dogs in most cases but this is not the first trouble these dogs have caused. There were 6 of them. Big german shepard and a mut that constantly breed and fill the roads with their run over offspring. Anyone whos met me will tell you I am typically against killing an animal without using it afterwards but sometimes theres a case for revenge.

The sheriffs department said they would set A trap on the next business day if they got a chance. Fuck government, even small government, some things need to be handled in a different manner.

When asked to clarify on some points, he said this:

Quote:yeah i took both girls out seperatly to identify the offending dogs. I deffinitly did not want to senselessly kill a dog. Both girls saw it happen, both girls identified the big German Shepard and a small Australian Shepard (that a neighbor shot with bird shot and I killed out of mercy). This big German Shepard roughed up my dog once before but that was when the wife was walking him by its "Not its Home" so I forgave it there.

Shitty situation but at least the neighborhoods a safer place. Probably didnt go about it in as controlled manner as I should have but Ill sleep alright

I hate trash and their trash dogs, especially ones "they don't own". I wish my friend didn't live in such a mediocre semi ghetto place. Nothing like shitbags letting "not their dogs" run around from "not it's home" to come and rip open your dog in front of your daughters.

I have no problem gunning down people's dogs like that, and have come close to doing so before.
