No, it WAS important then because of the fact it WAS all amateurs and the Russians and East Germans at the time were always known to be "cheating" the rest of the world because their competitors were professionals in the sports they represented.
That's why it was a big deal. Canada slaughtered the Russian team in this winter's Olympic game. It was pathetic and nothing as exciting as it used to be.
They even changed the rules and are allowing rougher play and things that used to get you a penalty in Olympic Hockey is now overlooked.
I like the way it used to be. All amateurs, every four years and not split to every two like it is now. Yeah, I know it's every four but it's every 4 per summer or winter giving us two years apart for olympic games of some sort on the TV. I don't even remember how they did this or when it was done, I was like, "WTH? when did this every 2 year shit happen?"
