I gotta say that the whole idea of Kirk's "troubled childhood" is wildly misinterpreted! I see it as them showing a kid with a "wild" streak. A bit of a daredevil if you will. And this sets up the kind of person that makes it to Captain on a starship. Someone who can lead by example if you will.
Fuck the purists! Stop comparing the new ST with the past. This is all new. Take it at face value. FFS Evolve!
As for the "Roddenberry message" - it's there, you just have to understand that starting with Kirk you have to - dare I say it again? EVOLVE! Why? Because at this time space exploration is all new.
