We've been discussing this fight at work for almost a month now heh.
Anyway... No... it's because Mech is the short form of BattleMech. BattleMechs are fictional futuristic robots piloted in a "traditional" way with levers, buttons, switches, etc...
A Gundam is a giant robot that uses a control system that is an extension of the human body. You move your leg it move's it's leg. You make a fist, it makes a fist.
Then there's the whole Gundam is Anime, BattleMech's are from a miniatures game called BattleTech that went the computer as MechWarror... Also some BattleTech artwork comes from Dougram [aka Robotech] and there were whole legality issues about it thanks to Harmony Gold.
At any rate, I love how the USA machine actually looks like one of the BattleTech/Dougram mecha. It's called an Archer in BattleTech and I forget what in Dougram. Pictured below.
