I killed a bat with my truck once, it flew into the grille. Like this guy I am a big fan of four wheeling when it snows. Whenever we have a storm im out driving around because its fun. However I dont see what reason going out on a lake/pond serves there is no way of knowing the ice thickness plus your risking alot in doing so, your life, your property(the truck), this case your pet. Its easy for us to say what a dumbass why do that etc from looking in on the situation.
We all have lapses in judgement some worse than others the main thing I fault this guy on is bringing the dog I would never take a pet out with me in the snow because you just never know what can happen. Putting aside the driving on the lake, say he was stranded on a road hit a snow berm or something and had to walk to get help or something the dog is just another thing to worry about getting through the mess.
From a legal stand point pets are peoples property they can do with them as they please within reason. Unless there is blatant disregard for the pet or the owner intentionally harmed the pet. In this case its pretty obvious this guy loved his dog and did not want it to get hurt. It was an accident so for him to get punished, legally its hard. I would think this guy is probably punishing himself enough having to live with what he did, if he almost killed himself jumping back in to try and get the dog.
