They do it to collect data to see what is bought most and what is trending and they mix up their sales and even change store layouts based on the results. They dont care about your information they just want to know customer A bought a candy bar because we discounted it and needed 6 rolls of jumbo toilet paper. Then when you come in 4 months later to buy toilet paper again they know customer A needs toilet paper approximately every 4 months. Then they use that data to help their store in ways I mentioned above but then a company like Charmin may want to buy the data from cvs or walgreens that was collected to see how often people use 6 rolls of jumbo toilet paper.
It gets pretty complex and people have no Idea they just care about the good deal, but all these companies make bank on the data collecting and marketing end of these rewards programs.
