Its a strange given that when the planet's average temperature increases, the increase tends to be gradual and less volatile.
It is also a strange given that when the planet's average temperature decreases, the decreases tend to be jerky and more volatile. I can't give you a good reason why, but it does.
The highly rated History Channel program of Little Ice Age: Big Chill, made a good point of the sudden change in weather within all of Europe. And not only did the weather suddenly turn colder, but it rained, and it rained, and didn't stop until it has destroyed all the crops cultivated on marginal land. It was like someone flipped a switch.
