I'm sure if you looked hard enough you could find more actual animals that pokemon are adapted from.

The Philadelphia zoo used to have a good number of Kirk's dik dik's. I first saw one there when I was just a kid. Cute little buggers.

Armadillos........Texans think of them as biological speed bumps.
