Are Arm and Hammer products available to you? If so, they make an excellent cat litter deodorizer which is based on baking soda but with a few more additives.
As far as "better" food, remember, just because it costs more doesn't mean it's better. Read the ingredients list. The more meat/meat byproducts and protein the better. I use what is considered to be a "cheap" food but it is filled with good stuff for my cats and dogs.
