Hmm, nothing on this here that I heard, maybe someone else did though.
I'm with you - idiots. Flares and noise are not going to scare them off from your camp either. Although gorgeous, they are man eaters and highly intelligent. They know you're there and they'll come get you and whatever else is around you. Especially if they are living in crowded, unnatural conditions for polar bears.
Up north in some places, people go to garbage dumps to go bear watching and there have been documentaries showing how these animals will rip open the side of a trailer home to get to whatever and whoever is inside. This also is not behavior of starving animals, you just don't belong on their turf. Period.
