Homeowners insurance and pet insurance are separate entities here too.
It's the liability of having a dog that screws you on homeowners insurance. I don't know if my homeowners issues in only in New Jersey or nation wide, but here a burglar can sue you if your dog bites him, cuts himself breaking into your home, gets kicked trying to steal your horses etc. You can't protect yourself or you wind up getting sued by the very asshole trying to harm you and yours.
Years and years ago owning a dog would have been considered a burglary deterrent but now it's another thing to have insurance companies use to stack the odds in their favor and not write you.
Right now in NJ, I'm lobbying my state senator to put insurance companies in with Gambling because IMO it's the same thing.
