Well, I ran thru the gamut of cat boxes, amounts of boxes and litter types.
With 6 cats I had 4 big boxes down in the basement with clumping litter. It was a real pain in the ass with them down there and it seemed to stink more and I found myself cleaning the boxes less often that I normally would. So, I moved two upstairs into the 'office' and it was much more manageable.
Then I got a LitterMaid automatic box. Well that lasted about a year and I got sick of that thing. I got a brand new one sitting in the basement too. Unopened at that! I hated it. I was constantly 'unsticking' the thing as it was trying to rake and it was just awful. It filled up those tiny containers and I was going through 4 containers a day and it wasted litter like mad. The clumping litter for it was expensive too. Using any other kind just didn't work. I wasted a year experimenting with litter that wasn't litter maid brand.
So I got a single box system going now and virtually no smell! Well except when Iggy takes a crap behind me. That cat reeks for some reason and he eats the same food as everyone else!
Pet Smart has this gigantic box with storage slots on the side for scoopers and bags. I don't keep the bags in there but in the white pail you see. The yellow pail is what I scoop out as needed and chucked out during the day. I dont' use clumpy litter anymore but I switched to Feline Pine or Yesterday's News. I like the pine better for the smell. There practically is none. It took me awhile to learn to 'work' the litter to my advantage but it's the best I've used so far.
Feline Pine is a pelleted, compressed pine 'saw dust' deal and it expands as it absorbs moisture. That stuff even sucks the life out of the poop and makes it easy to scoop out. As it absorbs, it loosens to sawdust. You scoop out the poop and then fluff the litter, shake the box for the un-poofed pellets to rise up and I do a complete change out every three days. When it's humid out I clean it every other day.
It's WAY cheaper - $9 for a 40# bag compared to $16 / 40# clumpy stuff. Some are more (clumpy).
The cats seem to like it better as well and I found with this litter you don't get stains on the bottom of the box or anything sticking and clumped so hard you have to scrape it with a shovel. The stuff absorbs so well that it does not eat the plastic and degrade it so the stink is soaked into the plastic as well. No more having to buy new boxes because the piss eats the plastic up every few months. I buy a new one of these behemoths once a year. OH and when I swap out for new littler, all I have to do is wipe the inside out with cleaner and a paper towel. No more needing to soak in bleach because it's not 'chewed' up by the litter and piss.
