I've been in houses with cat hoarders... you can't even imagine the smell. It's eye watering.
The lady who kept these cats would talk about them like she was doing a good thing, getting fish rejects from the fish market, kittens and dams all over the place, snotty noses, skinny cats, fur on the floors from fights, litter boxes overflowing and full of maggots. Flies! OMG The house was full of flies.
The sad thing is these were all purebred Siamese cats and she considered herself a breeder. WTF? The lines were so mixed up and the breeding program non existant. These poor animals were on the losing end of the deal from the first cat she bought and bred.
I made an anonymous call to the ASPCA. Sadly this was 1978 and this wasn't considered an issue then. So, I called the department of Health in NYC. They did something about it. Now an anonymous call to the ASPCA will get results.
