God I hate pet shop names for hamsters. There is no such thing as a Teddy Bear hamster. They are called Syrian hamsters and they come in different colors.

LOADS of really good info on all kinds of hamsters on that site.
It's funny, these lovely little pets have been touted as great 'starter' pets for children for ages but in reality, they are better suited for adults due to their small size, nocturnal life and their propensity to bite if mishandled. Dwarf hamsters are even more prone to bite if you freak them out and they are way too swift for a child to handle in my opinion.
