I'm with you on all the remakes lately. Seems Hollywood has lost all imagination and creativity but this one IS a good one to remake. The story is a good one as I remember but the animations and special effects were pure crap. This one is deserving of modernization. I just hope they didn't put too much crap into the story and stuck with the original and just punched up the effects.

I don't know about Val Kilmer but here's the cast list:
