0 Born in 1942 in Wichita, Kansas this man has become a pioneer in marine biology/archaeology and undersea exploration technology.
He has either invented or collaborated on many of the deep submersible vehicles and is credited with most of the major sunken ship discoveries since the 1980's. Who is this man and name 3 of his major shipwreck discoveries.

0 That would be Commander U.S.N. (Ret.) Robert Ballard
Most famous shipwreck discovery: RMS Titanic Other famous shipwrecks he discovered: ..Bismarck ..Lusitania ..USS Yorktown Submersibles (manned AND unmanned) he helped design: Argo Jason Junior (I don't know any more, but there are more) He has also written several books. Sorry LK, you picked one of my favorite people... lol I first got interested in him/his career when I did a report on the Titanic in High School. What most people don't know is he wasn't even supposed to be looking for the Titanic. He was being paid by the Navy to look for 2 subs lost during the 60s. The USS Thresher (SSN-593) [Lead boat in the Thresher class of boats] and the USS Scorpion (SSN-589) [A Skipjack class boat]... 2 early nuclear powered subs. He found both, which had imploded from exceeding their crush depth (or from a fault), by following their debris trails (created by the effects of underwater implosion) right to the wrecks. So, he employed the same technique to find the Titanic. And it worked. 0 Ah you indeed are correct Ral.
As far as the Titanic mission......Ballard intended to search for it BUT had no operating cash. In order to get it he did the Thresher and Scorpion searches and the USN told him if there were funds left he could use them to look for Titanic. It was serendipitous (and he admits it) that discovering the implosion debris field effect helped him find Titanic. BTW, other submersible: ALVIN Good show sir. Post away!

0 I thought Alvin was built prior to his retirement from the Navy? Or was he part of its rebuild later in life? Oh well, semantics lol!
This man is a former Navy SEAL and is responsible for the creation of TWO unique Navy Counter Intelligence & Operations teams. He served in Vietnam, and is/was a convicted felon. He has also authored several books. Name the man, the 2 teams he created, and if you're really full of piss & vinegar, the name of his book series. |
